Each year at 8.00pm on 10th November, the London Branch of The Western Front Association holds a ceremony of commemoration at Victoria Station to remember the arrival of the Unknown Warrior.
The Unknown Warrior
The body of the Unknown Warrior, sealed in a casket, was brought to Platform 8 at Victoria Station on 10 November 1920 at 8.32pm. An overnight vigil was maintained by Servicemen.
On the morning of 11 November 1920, the casket was placed onto a gun carriage of the Royal Horse Artillery and drawn by six horses through immense and silent crowds.
As the cortege set off, a field marshal’s salute was fired in Hyde Park.
The route followed was Hyde Park Corner, The Mall, thence to Whitehall and the Cenotaph. After the unveiling of the Cenotaph, the cortege was followed by the King, the Royal Family and ministers of state to Westminster Abbey.
